You’ve got to hand it to Roma; across the entire archipelago of clubs featuring in this World Cup analysis, Roma has possibly the most eclectic mix of personnel, as shown here in its World Cup dream team, represented by players from 7 different countries.

Communication in defence may well be a problem here as players are sourced from 4 countries. Attempting to call the line to set the offside trap will surely be challenging. Michael Konsel from Austria keeps goal with just 3 games World Cup experience. He will certainly be relying on the class and experience of Cafu at right back, still the only man to have played in 3 World Cup final matches. Vincent Candela at left back is light on World Cup game time too, so it is critical to have seasoned professionals, Thomas Berthold and Aldair locking the centre of defence.

It’s an alluring mix in midfield. 1982 World Cup winner, Bruno Conti, is given the task of tearing down the flanks and opening the door to goal, with Poland’s Boniek, Brazil’s Falcao, and Italy’s Totti all capable of pushing on and providing a threat to goal.

In attack, a Germany – Argentina combination can present its own difficulties, and neither Rudi Voller, nor Claudio Caniggia is necessarily famed for calm and rational behaviour on the field of play, or in the players’ tunnel!

This team looks short of goals with only 10 under its belt, but maybe this league of nations can rise above the noise and be greater than the sum of its parts.
